Inspired by the enthusiasm shown by the knowledgeable bird guides and passionate speakers aboard Flock to Marion, Tessa Donnellan (13) and James Bebbington (12) have taken up the challenge to help raise awareness for the plight of seabirds at Marion Island.

The children, with help from their parents, are hoping to encourage support for the Mouse-Free Marion Project and will be holding a fundraiser along with Zip Zap Circus.

Zip-Zap Circus is an acrobatics and circus school based in Cape Town, with a mission to empower young people as well as bridge socio-economic gaps.

The family-friendly โ€˜SLAPSTICKโ€™ show will be held on the 27th of August at the Zip-Zap Dome in Cape Town. Tickets will be sold on Quicket with the proceeds being split between Zip-Zap and Mouse-Free Marion.

Happy National Women's Day from the Mouse-Free Marion Project

#DYK that even though the first human landings at Marion Island took place in the 1800s followed by about 150 years of visits, it wasnโ€™t until 1959 that Hazel Watt became the first woman to step foot on Marion Island. Hazel was the wife of a radio technician stationed on the island and was allowed to "spend a few hours at the weather station".

Following from this brief visit, it was two decades before the South African National Antarctic Programme (SANAP) included women in its annual expeditions, at first only initially aboard ship, and then for short relief visits on the island. The first South African female scientist to go ashore on Marion Island was Pamela Laycock in September 1979. The first women to spend a full year on Marion as part of an over-wintering team were biologists Marita Cawood and Marianna Steenkamp in 1986.

Since the mid-1990s women have thankfully become regular members of over-wintering teams (including as scientists, meteorologists. medical orderlies and team leaders). However, it was not until 2003 that meteorologist Samantha Linnerts over-wintered as the first woman of colour.

Currently, there are 7 women taking part in the overwintering team at Marion Island, including research assistants appointed to advance planning and preparations for the Mouse-Free Marion Project.

Read more about these and other remarkable women in Marion Island's history at the News link in our bio.
