Welcome home!!

The S.A. Agulhas II is currently in the Port of Cape Town, Cruise Terminal.

After spending 13 months in the cold, harsh, windy sub-Antarctic, Marion79 team members are soaking up some sun, before going through passport control.

After customs the ship will move in to East Pie, where family, friends and colleagues will be waiting.

We were at the Department of Botany and Zoology, Stellenbosch University today, where the South African Polar Research Infrastucture, Data Products and Society (DPS) Node is hosted.

DPS, together with ALSA, the SAPRI Manager, SAPRI Research Coordinators and SAEON Science Engagement Officers discussed the SAPRI Science Engagement and the way forward.

The S.A. Agulhas II is currently on her way back to Cape Town, after a successful takeover at the sub-Antarctic Marion Island.

The SAWS team shared some images of their first moments on the island.

50% of the #Gough65 (2019-2020) team reunionited on Marion Island.
One of them was on M79, three now on the M80 team (staying behind on the island), and one part of the takeover team.

L-R: Dylan Seaton (M80 Marion Island Marine Mammal Programme Field Assistant), Errol Julies (Assistant Departmental Coordinating Officer #DFFE), Michelle Risi (MAPRU Marine Apex Predator Research Unit Field Assistant), Thendo Sikhwari (South African Weather Service Senior Meteorological Technician and Christopher Jones (MAPRU Field Assistant).

Takeover function: this is a semi-formal function where the official duties of the outgoing team are handed over to the new team. Everyone on the island attends the function.

The S61 team has joined the Antarctic Legacy of South Africa (on the archive)!

We got hold of the 61st SANAE overwintering team's team photos S61 has returned to Cape Town February 2023.
