Happy Midwinter 2026

Happy Midwinter 2026

As the Antarctic winter reaches its midpoint and the winter solstice marks the longest night of the year in the Southern Hemisphere, the South African National Antarctic Programme (SANAP) joins the international polar community in celebrating Midwinter – one of the most cherished traditions in Antarctic history. For generations of explorers, researchers, support personnel and overwintering teams, Midwinter has been a moment of reflection, camaraderie and celebration during the darkest months of the Antarctic winter. Since the earliest South African expeditions, SANAP teams have observed this special occasion at South Africa’s Antarctic and sub-Antarctic stations, continuing a tradition that has become an important part of the programme’s heritage. Every year, Midwinter is celebrated by teams from many nations stationed across Antarctica, as well as by those on the sub-Antarctic islands. Former expedition members often continue the tradition long after their return home, gathering with fellow veterans, friends and family to commemorate their shared experiences in some of the world’s most remote environments.
The winter solstice also offers an opportunity to reflect on the extraordinary environments that SANAP is privileged to study and protect. The Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions are among the most sensitive indicators of global environmental change. As we celebrate Midwinter, we are reminded of the importance of understanding climate change, protecting our natural environment, and embracing our collective responsibility towards the Earth and future generations.
On Saturday, 20 June, members of the SANAP community gathered in Stellenbosch to celebrate Midwinter together. The event was hosted by the Antarctic Legacy of South Africa (ALSA) and provided another welcome opportunity to reconnect with friends, colleagues and members of the wider SANAP family. More information and photographs from the celebration will be shared soon.
As we mark this special occasion, SANAP extends warm Midwinter greetings to all current and former expedition members who have contributed to South Africa’s proud polar legacy. We especially wish the current overwintering teams at SANAE IV and Gough Island — SANAE 65 and Gough 71 — a joyful and memorable Midwinter celebration.
The South African Antarctic Club (SAAC) joins SANAP in wishing all current and previous team members, their families, and the broader polar community a very Happy Midwinter.
May the return of the sun bring renewed inspiration and connection to all who share a passion for Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.
